The Whitby Warriors took on the Mimico Mountaineers in the inaugural outdoor game at Peel Park on Saturday June 19. In the second meeting of the season for these two teams, Warriors net minder Jason Weber held Mimico to just 3 goals, 2 of which were the result of a Warrior in the sin bin. McNein Hewitt scored 2 of his 3 on the night in the first period solidifying the Warriors 3-0 lead after the first period.

The second period started off with Weber staring straight into a setting sun. Mimico capitalized with a 5 hole goal from Adrian Singh. The Warriors wouldn’t be beat, with a goal each from Cody Simpson, Nate Kersten’s and Hewitt’s 3rd goal of the night as the period was winding down. The second period ended with the Warriors leading the Mountaineers 6-1.

The third period kicked off with another quick power play goal from the Mountaineers Adrian Singh, after Travis Johnstone was sent to the box for getting his stick a little too high. After a 3rd goal from the Mountaineers just 3 minutes later, the Warriors defence went into high gear and Weber kept out the remaining Mountaineers attempts at scoring. At the three minute mark of the period, Mountaineers Ryan Ferizovic and Warriors Matt Hurren decided they’d had enough of the game and a scuffle ensued with each getting 5 minutes in the box. With one final goal from Whitby’s Jason Heickert the Warriors topped the Mountaineers with a final score of 7-3.

The Warriors will look for their 7th win of the year when they take on Huntsville on Thursday June 23 at Iroquois Park. Game time is 7pm.
